TikTok Shop Carriers and Tracking Numbers: Getting Them Right

A technical guide to carriers and tracking on TikTok Shop, covering platform labels, uploading tracking numbers, valid tracking, first scans and common tracking errors.

Tracking numbers are how TikTok Shop knows an order has really shipped and where it is. They power the delivery updates customers see, the dispatch and delivery metrics that affect your account health, and the evidence you need when a customer says a parcel never arrived. Getting tracking wrong, by uploading late, using the wrong carrier or entering invalid numbers, can turn on-time shipments into late ones on paper.

This guide explains how carriers and tracking work on TikTok Shop, for both platform shipping and seller shipping. Supported carriers, label tools and metric names vary by market, so check the logistics section and help centre for your market.

Why Tracking Matters

Platform Shipping Labels

With platform shipping, you arrange shipment in Seller Center, choose pickup or drop-off where offered and print the label the platform generates. The tracking number is attached to the order automatically, and the carrier's scans flow back into the system. This removes most tracking errors, which is why platform shipping is recommended for new sellers in markets where it is available.

Your responsibilities are to print the right label for the right parcel, attach it securely and hand parcels to the carrier on time. A label printed but not scanned does not count as shipped in most systems.

Seller Shipping and Uploading Tracking

With seller shipping, you buy postage from your own carrier and upload the tracking number and carrier name to each order in Seller Center, usually through a "ship" or "mark as shipped" action. You can often upload tracking in bulk using a spreadsheet, or automatically through an integration or OMS.

Choose the carrier from the supported list exactly as it appears. If your carrier is not on the list, check whether an "other" option exists and what it requires; tracking from unsupported carriers may not be counted as valid. Our guide to shipping templates explains platform and seller shipping settings.

What Makes a Tracking Number Valid

A valid tracking number is one that belongs to the carrier you selected, is formatted correctly, is unique to the order and shows carrier scan events within the expected time. Common invalid cases include typos, numbers assigned to the wrong carrier, numbers reused across orders, numbers created but never scanned and numbers from services without tracking.

Overview of the main sections covered in TikTok Shop Carriers and Tracking Numbers: Getting Them Right

First Scan and Dispatch Timing

Many markets judge dispatch by the first carrier scan, not by when you printed the label or clicked "shipped". If parcels sit in your warehouse after labelling, or the carrier collects late, orders may look late even if packing was quick. Agree reliable pickup times with carriers, use drop-off points with frequent collections and avoid printing labels long before parcels leave. Our shipping performance guide explains the metrics.

Uploading Tracking on Time

With seller shipping, upload tracking as soon as each parcel is labelled, ideally automatically. Late uploads can make orders appear unshipped and trigger late-dispatch or auto-cancellation. Set a daily cut-off when all tracking for the day must be uploaded, and check that the count of uploaded numbers matches parcels collected.

Bulk Tracking Uploads

For higher volumes, Seller Center may offer a bulk shipping or bulk tracking upload using a template with order IDs, carriers and tracking numbers. Export pending orders, add tracking from your carrier software and upload. Check the result report for failed rows, which usually mean a wrong order ID, carrier name or duplicate number. An integration or OMS that pushes tracking automatically is better still. See our guide to order management systems.

Split Shipments and Multiple Tracking Numbers

If an order ships in more than one parcel, check whether your market supports multiple tracking numbers per order and how to add them. Upload every number so the customer can follow each parcel. If only one number is supported, ship together where possible. Our multiple warehouses guide discusses split shipments.

Correcting a Wrong Tracking Number

Mistakes happen. If you upload a wrong number or carrier, correct it as quickly as possible. Seller Center may allow editing tracking within a time window; after that, you may need seller support. Keep carrier receipts and manifests as evidence that the parcel shipped on time.

Tracking Problems After Shipment

Sometimes tracking stops updating, shows a delivery exception or says delivered when the customer says otherwise. Check the carrier's own tracking page, contact the carrier with the tracking number and keep the customer informed. For lost parcels, follow your market's process for reshipping or refunding and filing carrier claims. Our customer service guide covers communication.

Choosing Carriers for Seller Shipping

When choosing carriers, consider reliability, speed, coverage, scan quality, pickup options and cost. A cheap service with poor scanning can damage your metrics more than it saves. Test carriers with real parcels and compare delivery times and tracking quality before committing. Keep a backup carrier for peaks and disruptions.

A Worked Example: Fixing a Valid Tracking Problem

A seller using its own carrier sees its valid tracking rate drop. Investigation shows that staff were uploading tracking numbers from labels printed for parcels that were then held back because of missing items, so the numbers never received a scan. Others were selected with a similarly named but wrong carrier. The seller changes the process: labels are printed only after parcels are fully packed, tracking is pushed automatically from the shipping software and the carrier mapping is fixed in the integration. The valid tracking rate recovers over the following weeks.

Tracking for Platform Fulfillment and 3PLs

If a 3PL or platform fulfillment programme ships for you, tracking is usually handled by their systems. With a 3PL, the 3PL's software or your integration pushes tracking back to TikTok Shop. Confirm during onboarding exactly how and when that happens, which carrier names are mapped and what happens to orders the 3PL cannot ship. Ask for a daily report of shipped orders and tracking numbers so you can spot gaps before they become late orders. With platform fulfillment, tracking is attached automatically, but you should still watch delivery performance and stock levels.

Whoever ships, the shop owner remains responsible for the metrics. Do not assume a partner is uploading tracking correctly; check a sample of orders each week against the carrier's own tracking pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a tracking number on TikTok Shop?

With seller shipping, upload the tracking number and carrier on each order in Seller Center, in bulk or through an integration. Platform shipping adds tracking automatically.

What is a valid tracking number?

One that belongs to the selected carrier, is correctly formatted, unique to the order and shows carrier scans in time.

Why does my order show as late when I shipped on time?

Dispatch is often measured by the first carrier scan. Late pickups or late tracking uploads can make orders look late.

Can I use any carrier?

Choose from supported carriers in your market. Tracking from unsupported carriers may not count as valid.

Can I upload tracking in bulk?

Many markets offer bulk tracking uploads with a template, and integrations can push tracking automatically.

What if I entered the wrong tracking number?

Correct it quickly if editing is allowed, or contact seller support, and keep carrier receipts as evidence.

Can an order have more than one tracking number?

Some markets support multiple tracking numbers for split shipments. Check your order tools.

Does platform shipping include tracking?

Yes. Platform labels include tracking that syncs to the order automatically.

What should I do if a parcel is lost?

Check carrier tracking, contact the carrier, update the customer and follow your market's reship or refund process.

How do I improve my valid tracking rate?

Use supported carriers, print labels only for packed parcels, upload tracking immediately and fix carrier mappings.

Does tracking affect payouts?

In some markets settlement timing depends on delivery confirmation, so accurate tracking can affect when you are paid.

Should I keep shipping receipts?

Yes. Carrier receipts and manifests help prove on-time shipment in disputes or metric appeals.

Who uploads tracking when a 3PL ships my orders?

Usually the 3PL software or your integration pushes it automatically. Confirm the process during onboarding and check a sample of orders every week.
