Setting Up SKUs and Variants on TikTok Shop Correctly

A technical guide to structuring SKUs and variants on TikTok Shop, from variant attributes and SKU codes to images, pricing, stock and integration-friendly naming.

Variants are how TikTok Shop handles one product that comes in several versions, such as sizes, colours, flavours or pack sizes. Getting variant structure and SKU codes right makes listings easier to shop, keeps reviews together and prevents stock and integration errors. Getting it wrong leads to confused customers, wrong shipments and sync failures that cause cancellations.

This guide explains how to plan and set up SKUs and variants on TikTok Shop. Exact field names and limits vary by category and market, so check the options shown when you create a product.

Products, Variants and SKUs

A product is the listing customers see. A variant is one version of that product, defined by one or more attributes, such as "Blue, Medium". Each variant has its own SKU, which carries its own price, stock and, ideally, a unique seller SKU code that matches your inventory system.

Think of the product as the shelf label and each SKU as an individual item on the shelf. Customers browse the product; your warehouse picks SKUs.

When to Use Variants

Use variants when items are genuinely the same product in different versions: sizes, colours, scents, flavours, capacities or pack quantities. Grouping them in one listing concentrates reviews and sales history, which helps conversion and visibility.

Do not use variants to combine different products into one listing, such as a phone case and a charger. That confuses shoppers, can break listing rules and makes reviews meaningless. Different products deserve separate listings, or a bundle listing if sold together. Our bundle listings guide covers that case.

Choosing Variant Attributes

Most categories offer standard variant attributes such as colour and size, and some allow custom values. Use standard attributes where available, since they help shoppers filter and help TikTok understand your listing. Many listings support one or two variant dimensions; plan combinations carefully, because ten colours across eight sizes creates eighty SKUs to manage.

If a combination does not exist, such as a colour unavailable in the largest size, remove that SKU or set it unavailable rather than leaving a confusing zero-stock option.

Naming Variants Clearly

Variant names should be short, specific and consistent: "Sage Green" rather than "Colour 3", "500 ml" rather than "Big". Use the same naming conventions across all products so shoppers and your team recognise options instantly. Avoid promotional words in variant names, which may break listing rules.

Seller SKU Codes

Give every SKU a unique seller SKU code that matches the code in your inventory, warehouse and accounting systems. A clear structure helps everyone, for example BRAND-PRODUCT-COLOUR-SIZE. Never reuse codes across different items, and avoid spaces and special characters that some integrations reject.

Consistent SKU codes are the foundation of reliable integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon MCF or an order management system. See our guides to Shopify integration and order management systems.

Overview of the main sections covered in Setting Up SKUs and Variants on TikTok Shop Correctly

Images for Each Variant

Upload an image for every visual variant, especially colours. When a shopper taps "Sage Green", the image should show the sage green product. Missing variant images are a common cause of "not as pictured" returns. Our image and video specs guide covers technical requirements.

Pricing Variants

Variants can have different prices, such as larger sizes costing more. Make sure each price is correct before publishing; a mispriced variant can sell out at a loss within minutes if a video goes viral. If you run promotions, check how discounts apply across variants.

Stock per SKU

Stock is held at SKU level. Popular variants sell out first, especially those shown in viral videos. Monitor stock per SKU, set safety buffers on bestsellers and restock the variants creators feature most. Our stock management guide explains settings and alerts.

Weights and Dimensions per Variant

Shipping costs and estimates depend on package weight and dimensions. If variants differ in size, such as a single unit versus a three-pack, enter accurate weights and dimensions for each. Incorrect values can cause shipping charge adjustments or label problems.

GTINs and Barcodes for Variants

Where barcodes are required or recommended, each variant usually needs its own GTIN, because each is a different sellable item. Our GTIN and barcode guide explains requirements.

Editing Variants After Launch

Adding a new colour or size to an existing listing keeps reviews together and is usually better than creating a separate listing. Be careful when renaming or removing variants that have sales history or are linked to integrations; changes can break mappings. Update integration mappings at the same time and test with an order.

Variants and Integrations

When products sync from another platform, variant structure must match on both sides. Mismatched attribute names or missing SKU codes are among the most common sync failures. Clean up variant data in your source system first, then sync.

A Worked Example: Structuring a T-Shirt Listing

Imagine a brand selling a cotton t-shirt in four colours (black, white, sage green and navy) and five sizes (XS to XL). That is twenty possible SKUs. The listing should be one product with two variant attributes, colour and size. Each colour gets its own set of images, so tapping "Navy" shows the navy shirt. Each of the twenty SKUs gets a unique code, for example TEE-NAV-M for navy medium, and its own stock level.

Now suppose the brand never produced white in XS. Rather than leaving TEE-WHT-XS live with zero stock forever, remove that combination or mark it unavailable. Shoppers see only real options, and your team never has to wonder whether that SKU exists. If the brand later adds an olive colour, it adds five new SKUs to the same listing, keeping every review the shirt has earned.

A Worked Example: Pack Sizes and Bundles

A supplement brand might sell the same product as a single bottle, a two-pack and a three-pack. These can work well as variants of one listing because they are the same product in different quantities, and shoppers like comparing price per unit. Each pack size needs its own SKU code, price, weight, dimensions and, where required, barcode. Stock is often tracked separately for each pack, or, if the warehouse builds packs on demand, the integration must deduct the correct number of single units.

A gift set containing different products, such as a cleanser, serum and moisturiser, is different. That is a bundle, not a variant, and it should be a separate listing that explains exactly what is included. See our bundle listings guide for the setup.

How Variants Appear to Shoppers

On the product page, shoppers usually see a variant selector after tapping to buy. The first image they see is often the main product image, and the variant images appear once they choose an option. Order variants logically (sizes from smallest to largest, colours with the bestseller first) so the most popular option is easy to find. If creators usually feature one colour, make sure that colour is clearly available and well stocked, because shoppers arriving from a video expect to buy exactly what they just watched.

Auditing Variants Regularly

Once a quarter, export your catalog and look for problems: SKUs with no sales in ninety days, variants with missing images, codes that do not match your inventory system and combinations that have been out of stock for weeks. Retire dead SKUs, fix the gaps and update integration mappings at the same time. A clean variant structure makes every other task, from promotions to forecasting, easier.

Common Variant Mistakes

Do I need a seller SKU code for every variant?

It is strongly recommended. Unique codes keep inventory, integrations and fulfillment accurate.

Should every variant have its own image?

Every visual variant, especially each colour, should have its own image to avoid confusion and returns.

Can I add a new colour to an existing listing?

Yes. Adding variants to an existing listing keeps reviews together. Update integrations at the same time.

Why are my variants not syncing?

Usually because of missing or duplicate SKU codes or mismatched variant attribute names between systems.

How many variants can a listing have?

Limits vary by category and market. Keep combinations manageable and remove ones you do not sell.

Do variants need separate barcodes?

Where barcodes are required, each variant usually needs its own GTIN.
